The Graduate School of Engineering at Kyushu University invites applications from foreign students in Doctoral Course on Environmental Systems Engineering on the following conditions.

1. Study Areas and Number of Foreign Students for Admission
1.1 Study Areas: Earth Resources Engineering
Civil and Structural Engineering
Urban Environmental Engineering
Applied Quantum Physics and Nuclear Engineering
Maritime Engineering
  1.2 Status: Successful applicant will be granted a College Student visa
  1.3 Number of students to be accepted: Approximately 10

2. Qualification Requirements
2.1 Applicant: Foreign citizens who reside in Japan or in foreign countries.
2.2 Academic Background:
2.2.1 Those who hold or are to receive a Master's degree issued by a Japanese University by September 2008.
2.2.2 Those who hold or are to receive a Master's degree awarded by a postgraduate school outside Japan by September 30, 2008.
2.2.3 Those with qualifications equivalent to a Master's degree accorded by Kyushu University.

Health: Those who are certified as both physically and mentally healthy by a qualified and recognized physician.

Language: Applicants should preferably possess a form of official English qualification such as TOEFL, TOEIC, Cambridge, etc.

Time of Arrival: Successful applicants must arrive in Japan between October 1 and October 10, 2008.

Remarks:
1) Military personnel and civilian employees are not eligible for this course if they remain on active duty.
2) Those who do not arrive within the time limit will be subjected to cancellation of their enrollment.
3) Those who fail to receive a Master's degree by September 30, 2008 will be subjected to cancellation of their enrollment.

3. Fees
3.1 Entrance Examination Fee: 30,000 yen
3.2 Admission Fee: 282,000 yen
3.3 Tuition Fee: 535,800 yen for one year
But you have to pay a new tuition when revised.

4. Evaluation of Applicants
4.1 Successful applicants are to be selected by the examination committee.
4.2 Applicants will be notified of the results by late in July 2008. Successful applicants are to enroll as full-time graduate students.

5. Description of the Special Course
5.1 Thesis work will be carried out in English. Students will be expected to learn the Japanese language gradually during their stay.
5.2 Students will be expected to write a thesis based on research carried out during the course and submit it to examiners in the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyushu University for evaluation. A student will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Engineering, if the examiners are satisfied with the thesis.

6. Application Procedure
An original and a copy of the following documents and entrance examination fee of 30,000 yen must be lodged with the host professor, before the deadline of July 11, 2008(A11 of these documents MUST ARRIVE by the deadline.)
The documents must be issued by the head of the applicant's institution or establishment, if employed; and by the dean of the postgraduate school of the university from which the applicant was awarded the Master's degree, if he or she is now without any formal affiliation.
All of the following documents must be sent by registered air mail.
6.1 Completed Application Form(use the format supplied).
  6.2 Original Master's Degree Certificate and Bachelor's Degree Certificate or a certified letter from the postgraduate university at which the applicant is currently enrolled, stating the expected graduation date.
  6.3 Official Academic Transcript of undergraduate and graduate school records.
  6.4 A photocopy of Master's Thesis. If the thesis is not written in English, please attach a summary in English, on A4-size paper, to the thesis. Copies of any academic research publications in English are also acceptable with the thesis. An applicant who was not required to write a thesis for the Master's degree must state this in his or her application form and submit a copy of any academic research papers instead of the thesis.
  6.5 Letter of recommendation by the dean or head of the institution /employing body. Another recommendation letter preferably, the applicant's supervising professor, other teaching staff, or supervisor in the employing body with a personal knowledge of the applicant(use the format supplied).
  6.6 2 photographs(6×4cm; upper front figure without hat, taken within the last six months). Name and nationality must be indicated on the reverse side. One photograph must be fixed at the specifiedplace on the application form, and the other must be in an envelope.
  6.7 Certificate of official English qualification such as TOEFL, TOEIC, Cambridge etc.
(unnecessary if you are a native speaker of English)
  6.8 Letter of Approval from the Government, if necessary (Nationals of Indonesia are required to, while those of The People's Republic of China are advised to. Acquire the approval of their respective immigration authorities well in advance.)

NOTE
1) All applicants should note that they must keep in close contact with the prospective supervisory professor at Kyushu University in order to formulate a research plan which must be submitted for approval by Monbukagakusho.
2) The above documents should be type-written in English on A4 format.
3) Applications will not be accepted if any of the above documents are incomplete, incorrect or lacking supporting evidence. Applications arriving after the deadline will not be accepted.
4) All documents once submitted are not to be returned.
Entrance examination fee is not to be refunded.

7. Benefits
7.1 Based on the constitution of the Kyushu University, outstanding students who have financial difficulties may have the privilege to be granted half or full exemption of tuition fee.
7.2 The Association of International Education, Japan will subsidize the registered student's medical expenses.
  7.3 The University will encourage the student to apply for scholarships provided by private institutions other than Monbukagakusho.

8. Caution
8.1 If any of the information supplied in the application form is later found to be false, student will be disqualified to apply for any private scholarships and admission will no longer accepted.
8.2 Successful applicants are expected to learn and understand the geography, climate, customs and habits of Japan as well as the general features and conditions of Kyushu University in advance. Thesis work is to be carried out in English, but students are expected to learn Japanese for daily use.
