Kyushu University has a century of history. Today, the university has 19,604 students enrolled, 2,216 academic staff and 2,724 administrative staff in its 11 undergraduate schools, 18 graduate schools, 16 graduate faculties, 3 research institutes, 3 university hospitals, 6 libraries and in other areas.

In April 2000, we introduced a new graduate school and graduate faculty system. In this system, all the academic staff belong to a "faculty", which is the research body of the graduate schools. These faculties are independent from the graduate schools (Gakufu) and undergraduate schools (Gakubu) that form the educational bodies of the university. This is a pioneering system unique to Kyushu University. This system allows academic staff to work in the graduate schools and undergraduate schools without changing the faculties to which they belong. They are also able to engage in interdisciplinary education and research across different schools and study fields.

In the hilly district west of Fukuoka, we are constructing the new campus, into which we should be able to start relocating in 2005. We are creating an environment where students can enjoy studying as well as living on campus. The new campus will not only be for students, but will also be open to the public. We strongly believe that this will be an ideal campus, which will be new to everybody.

For the students, our advice is that you study hard. By this we don't only mean studying in your own fields, but we also mean studying about the realities of life and interaction and relationships between people. The university offers many means to produce well-rounded graduates, as is the tradition of our university.

We would like to aim for a "Kyushu University that continually improves and progresses". Following its tradition as a cornerstone of progression, you will see how the university changes through its website
